What Is The Abortion Pill?
The “abortion pill” is the common name for two medications that are used together to terminate a pregnancy: mifepristone and misoprostol. Mifepristone blocks the hormone progesterone, which stops the pregnancy from progressing. Misoprostol is taken 24 to 48 hours after mifepristone and causes bleeding and cramping as the uterus contracts and expels the embryo.
Progesterone, the hormone blocked by the first pill, can be prescribed as an abortion reversal medication to counteract the effects of mifepristone.
